CJ Willett

Biography

CJ Willett (they/them) believes that some of the biggest breakthroughs in training come from helping dogs feel safe, confident, and understood. They have a particular passion for working with anxious and fearful dogs, helping them build emotional regulation skills and develop the confidence they need to navigate the world successfully. Their calm, thoughtful presence and steady approach make them a favorite among both dogs and the Philly Unleashed team.

As one of the trainers in Philly Unleashed’s DaySchool program, CJ enjoys helping dogs build practical life skills through positive experiences, thoughtful training, and plenty of encouragement. Whether they’re introducing a shy dog to something new or helping a busy adolescent learn better self-control, CJ believes that confidence is the foundation for lasting behavior change.

CJ’s love of animals began early. Growing up in Florida, they attended summer camp at Doglando, where they participated in the Puppy BREATH program and discovered a passion for dog training. When they found a stray dog they later named Jesse, they convinced their parents to let them keep him, eventually earning his Canine Good Citizen title and participating in agility together.

After graduating from college, CJ moved to Philadelphia to work in cellular research at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Although they enjoyed science, they realized their true passion was working directly with animals and made the leap into professional dog training. They are currently working toward their CPDT-KA certification while continuing to expand their knowledge of canine behavior and training.

Outside of Philly Unleashed, CJ is deeply passionate about wildlife conservation and the protection of endangered species and their habitats. They are currently applying to veterinary schools with the goal of becoming a wildlife and zoo veterinarian—and everyone at Philly Unleashed is quietly hoping one of the local schools convinces them to stay.

CJ lives in West Philadelphia with their partner, Elizabeth, and their two pit bull mixes, Stella and Penny. When they’re not training dogs, they enjoy tent camping, painting, and getting lost in a good book.
