Peet Johnson, CPDT-KA, MAT

Biography

Growing up in northern New Jersey, Peet’s home always had at least 1 dog in it. Now living in South Philly his home has 3 dogs and 2 cats, two of them with special needs. Learning to train his special needs dogs led him to immerse himself in the world of dog training. After enrolling in the CATCH Dog Trainer Academy he joined the Philly Unleashed team as a Farmcamp trainer and earned his CPDT-KA certification. He now specializes in leash reactivity and leads the Dogs With Attitude Workshop.

Helping dogs adapt to new homes, new situations, and growing the relationship between dogs and their owners are some of Peet’s favorite things. He believes dogs of all types and behaviors deserve to live their best life with their people!

Peet has a Bachelor of Arts in illustration from School of Visual Arts, and a Master’s Degree in Education with a certification in Art. He taught for 6 years before relocating to Philadelphia where he’s been an illustrator and painter for the past 10 years.

If he’s not at home with his dogs, making art, or training someone else’s dogs, he can be found playing and singing in a metal band, or biking around the city.

What People Are Saying

Peet is awesome! He is extremely knowledgeable, passionate and patient! We have been working with Peet one-on-one for about 2 months with our puppy Newfoundland, who can be a bit spicy. Peet always takes the time to listen to our concerns and goals. Peet has provided us with valuable guidance and direction. Thanks to Peet’s guidance our puppy was able to pass his Canine Good Citizen test at only 9 months old! We look forward to continuing our training and agility work with Peet!

Peet Johnson has opened our eyes to better communication with our very active puppy. He is very observant and conscientious when working with our puppy, and communicates the different behaviors of our puppy, Odin, and what they mean for us. Peet has given us many tools to help encourage the behaviors that we want in Odin, and we have seen HUGE improvements in Odin’s training. Our large puppy can be very excitable and has a very high prey drive, and after working with Peet we are more confident in our own abilities with our puppy, and we are enjoying him so much more at home. We feel that Peet takes the time to get to know our dog’s unique personality and gives us very specific ways to help Odin become everything he is capable of being! We look forward to every training session, and Odin does too!

Peet is a wonderful trainer. My 60-lb pitbull, Frankie, and I have had three 1:1 sessions with him, and he is knowledgeable, friendly and thoughtful. He has an obvious love for dogs, was patient in reading Frankie and letting him get to know him (Frankie is now obsessed, and immediately put on his best behavior when we happened to run into Peet on the street), and carefully explained both the learning process of a dog and how I needed to adapt my human behavior to best communicate with him. He has deep empathy and love for the special needs of a rescue. Peet listens carefully to my concerns, is generous with his time, and above all just wants dogs to have the very best lives they can and deserve!

Peet has been so helpful in getting us into the mind our dog, Ivy. Our baby is a bit of a reactive girl, but after only a couple of lessons with Peet, she (and her parents) are becoming more confident in her walks. She can better control herself when a trigger might set her off, and we are learning to lean into her love for peanut butter. Peet is a wonderful coach with tons of tricks to help keep your pup active and the patience to work with you to achieve your dog goals!

Peet has been our trainer for the past few months and we have learned a great deal from him.  Our bloodhound is in love with Peet.  Our dog has difficulty on walks where he reacts to other dogs.  Peet has helped guide and instruct us where we are safely able to walk our dog without fear that we will see another dog.  Peet calmly trains us as he is training our dog.

Peet was a great help with training my new puppy, Nutmeg. It had been a while since I went through the “puppy stage” and we did three lessons together that were great learning experiences for me and Nutmeg. She LOVED him (and his bag of treats!) and quickly learned what he was asking of her. Peet always gave me the opportunity to practice the commands and techniques at the end of the lesson and provided feedback. Training a new puppy can be stressful, but hiring an expert is super helpful and I would highly recommend Peet! Nutmeg has a great foundation thanks to his help and we are excited to get her involved in Agility soon at his recommendation!
