Kim Borbone, CPDT-KA

Biography

Kim grew up in North Jersey surrounded by animals. Her family always had 3 dogs at a time, cats, and a horse! She started her animal training with horses as a teen, helping other riders have a better connection and understanding of their horse’s body language, teaching young riders the basics of riding, and even training a green horse. Now that she has grown out of the fearlessness of being able to get on any horse, she moved to dog training! She found a puppy when living in Spain and discovered that this puppy was a huge challenge. Indy, the puppy in question, was a big troublemaker. Kim had to look into training with her from the start and then quickly realized she had an anxious, smart, and athletic dog on her hands. With lots of training Indy became an upstanding member of society and Kim was able to finally relax.

Indy and Kim enrolled in a training class with Philly Unleashed and that is where they met Nicole. Nicole noticed the training that Kim and Indy had done and invited Kim to work for Philly Unleashed if she ever wanted to! Little did she know, Kim would take this offer almost immediately. Kim has been working with Philly Unleashed since 2017 but loves helping people better understand their pups and live a more harmonious life together.

Not long after, Kim adopted Fitz, her second dog. Fitz challenged Kim in ways Indy hadn’t – he was incredibly scared of things in his environment as well as people. Today, Fitz is still shy but the progress he has made is remarkable and he is able to live a full life and enjoys a trusted circle of human and dog friends! In part it is thanks to Fitz that Kim is our Shy Dog Specialist.

When she is not working, she is hiking with her dogs, Indy and Fitz, doing home renovation projects on her new house in Drexel Hill, kayaking, or enjoying a beer at a local brewery. She loves doing agility and trick training with Indy, and confidence building exercises for her fearful dog Fitz.

What People Are Saying

I have taken Kim’s Level 1 and 2 obedience classes with my little rescue terrier Eddie for a few months now. Eddie was already 8-10 years old when I adopted him and he didn’t know a single command and was reactive to other dogs on our walks. Kim has worked flexibly with us to help us become a great team. Eddie has grown in confidence (so have I) and we are so grateful that we found such a knowledgeable and patient trainer. Kim tailors her instructions to the individual dog and human and always comes up with fun games to make dog training fun. We have learned so much and look forward to continuing our journey to give Eddie all the skills he needs to be a confident and happy dog in every environment.

The first day my 5 month old Great Pyrenees puppy mix, Bentley, met Kim he was smitten!  He instantaneously had a connection with her and 5 months later still literally chases her car down the driveway when she arrives and leaves.

One of the main reasons I choose Philly Unleashed was because the trainers actually come to your house to train your dog in their own environment, which for me was more helpful than being in a classroom once a week.  Kim has been able to teach Bentley and I how to navigate squirrels and the 100’s of other dogs being walked in our neighborhood, calm him down when he is excited and the basic commands.

She is dedicated, loyal to the practice of positive reinforcement, passionate about training and abreast of current trends and industry standards.  I have picked up so many helpful ideas for snacks, toys, equipment, as well as ways to continuously ensure Bentley’s training progresses.  Kim is also completely flexible in booking appointments and truly works around your schedule, although it is probably inconvenient for her.

Kim is just one of the many qualified trainers working for Philly Unleashed, but in my opinion AWESOME!  .

Stef & Bentley

My dog Tina is very fearful of people, I’m pretty much the only person she‘s fully comfortable around. However when training with Kim, Tina almost forgot all about me and was ready to go home with her new best friend! I was so happy to see her so content around someone else, which was a result of Kim respecting her boundaries and understanding her so well! I have experience working with dogs so I’ve had my own opinions/beliefs about how to work with dogs especially when they’re fearful. And Kim’s tips, tricks, and explanations all aligned perfectly with my beliefs, and I learned so much useful information from her! Not only did me and Tina learn great stuff from Kim, but we had fun! She’s the best, can’t wait to take her shy dog classes coming up.
